If you’ve been researching HIFU, you’ve probably come across some conflicting information. Some sources say the results are permanent. Others say they last 12 months. So which answer is true, and what should you realistically expect?
Ultimately, it depends on whether you’re talking about HIFU for facial skin tightening or for body fat reduction. The two work on completely different tissues, and the way the results behave over time is quite different. Here’s what you need to know.
HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It’s a non-invasive treatment that delivers focused ultrasound energy deep into targeted tissue without breaking the skin.
For skin tightening and lifting (including our HIFU non-surgical facelift), the ultrasound energy targets the deeper structural layers of the skin, including the SMAS layer, which is the same layer surgeons address in a traditional facelift. The heat triggers a process called neocollagenesis, which is essentially your body building fresh collagen and elastin fibres. This is what creates that gradual lifting and firming effect.
For body contouring, the ultrasound energy is directed at subcutaneous fat cells, heating them to a point where they’re disrupted and then naturally eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system.
Both applications work with your body’s own processes, which is part of what makes HIFU such a well-regarded option for people who want progress without surgery.
HIFU results on the face work by stimulating new collagen, not by replacing or removing anything permanently. Because collagen production naturally slows as we age, results are not permanent, but they are long-lasting compared to many other non-surgical treatments.
Most people find that their HIFU results develop gradually over the weeks and months following treatment. For skin tightening, noticeable improvement is typically seen after 6–8 weeks, with full results developing over 2–4 months as new collagen and elastin form.
The results of facial HIFU treatments generally last 12 to 18 months, with peak improvements typically observed 3 to 6 months post-treatment.
Some people (particularly those who are younger, maintain healthy skin habits, and avoid excessive sun exposure) may find their HIFU results last for 2 years or more. Others in their 50s and beyond may notice a shorter window before a maintenance session feels worthwhile. There’s no single answer, because skin ageing is individual.
No cosmetic treatment can stop the ageing process. HIFU gives your skin a meaningful boost, but because collagen naturally breaks down over time, the results evolve.
When HIFU is used for body contouring, targeting areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, or under the chin, it permanently destroys fat cells in the treated area. Once the targeted fat cells are destroyed, they do not regenerate.
This is fundamentally different from what happens when you lose weight through diet and exercise, where fat cells simply shrink in size but remain in place. HIFU removes them from the treated area altogether.
For fat reduction, visible slimming and contouring are generally seen after 4–8 weeks, as the lymphatic system processes and removes the destroyed fat cells.
In that sense, body HIFU results in those specific treated areas can be considered long-lasting. However, HIFU doesn’t prevent your remaining fat cells from expanding if your diet and lifestyle change significantly. Maintaining a balanced diet and staying active is what locks in those long-term contouring results.
Whether you’re having facial HIFU or body HIFU, a few key factors influence the longevity of your results:
Younger individuals tend to have a more robust collagen production response, so people in their 30s and 40s may see longer-lasting results than those in their 50s and beyond. That said, HIFU can be highly effective at any age.
Consistent sun protection plays an important role in both treatment response and long-term results, as UV exposure accelerates collagen breakdown over time.A broad-spectrum SPF 50+ worn daily is one of the simplest things you can do to extend your HIFU results.
Smoking, chronic stress, poor sleep, and a diet low in key nutrients all accelerate collagen degradation. Conversely, staying well-hydrated, eating a diet rich in antioxidants, and maintaining a healthy weight help your results last longer.
The depth precision of HIFU plays a role in longevity. Treatments tailored to your individual skin and fat layer thickness, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, tend to produce more consistent results.
Getting the most from your HIFU results is really about supporting what the treatment has set in motion:
Daily SPF is non-negotiable. UV damage is one of the fastest ways to break down new collagen. A quality moisturiser and targeted skin tightening support between sessions can also help maintain elasticity and hydration.
For those looking to build on facial HIFU results, complementary treatments like Notox can address expression-related changes, while HIFU targets the deeper structural layer. Many clients find a combined approach very effective.
And when the time is right (typically every 12–18 months for facial HIFU), a maintenance session helps sustain and build on what you’ve already achieved, rather than starting from scratch.
At Body Catalyst, our approach to HIFU is thorough and personalised. Before any treatment, we take the time to understand your goals, assess your skin and body, and create a plan tailored to what you’re trying to achieve, whether that’s lifting and firming the face and neck or refining body contours in areas that aren’t responding to diet and exercise alone.
We’re also transparent about what HIFU can and can’t do. It’s an effective treatment backed by clinical evidence and trusted by many thousands of clients across Australia, but results are individual, and we believe you deserve honest guidance about what to expect for your body.
