Muscle Mass of female flexing

Building strong muslces isn’t just for gym junkies or fitness fanatics. Did you know that muscles play a vital role in your overall health and fitness at every stage of life. From allowing movement and balance to contributing to physical strength, muscles play an increasingly important role in energy and the ability to live a healthier, more active life. The good news is that no matter what age you are, your muscle tissue can be strengthened with the right lifestyle changes.

At Body Catalyst we’re here to help you shape your body and shapeshift your life, any way you choose.

Why is muscle mass important?

Our muscles play a vital role in our health at all stages of life, from allowing movement and balance to contributing to physical strength, organ function, skin integrity, immunity and wound healing.

As we age, we naturally lose muscle – once we hit 40 we can lose approximately 8 per cent of muscle per decade and this can almost double after the age of 70.

Muscle loss can be accelerated by illness and can lead to an increased risk of falls and fractures, and delay recovery from illness. So it’s important to do what we can to protect and preserve our muscles.

How do you improve muscle mass?

Volume, frequency and good nutritional building blocks.

Whether you are looking to accelerate fitness and training, or support healthy ageing, improving muscle mass happens over time. Injuries, muscle imbalances, changes to our training program or lifestyle can all lead to decreased muscle mass. But the good news is that we’re here to give hardworking muscles a helping hand.

Did you know that body shaping treatments now include muscle stimulation to build muscle and burn fat to achieve your body goals? At Body Catalyst we use TeslaFormer, a TGA approved medical grade technology that is able to stimulate up to 50,000 muscle contractions in a single 30 minute session. It works by using Functional Magnetic Stimulation (FMS) technology which targets deeper than exercise alone to reach hard to activate muscles for increased strength and definition.

It’s a no pain, no downtime option to build and tone muscles as part of a healthy lifestyle, training program, post pregnancy or post-injury.

Have a specific area or concern you’d like to focus on? TeslaFormer muscle defining treatment allows you to target specific muscle groups in a 30 minute session.

✓ Abdominal strength and definition
✓ Abdominal separation (diastasis recti)
✓ Lower back pain
✓ Defined glutes
✓ Toned arms

To achieve your body shape or definition goals we recommend at least 10 sessions with sessions every other day.

The importance of diet and muscle health

Adequate nutrition and maintaining a balanced diet are also vital pillars in supporting muscle health. But no single food provides all the nutrients needed for good health, so it’s important to eat a variety of foods. Just like you need oxygen to breathe, you need to nourish your muscles with protein and vitamin D to combat the breakdown as you recover.

Aim for a good quality protein source at each meal. Proteins contain amino acids, which are the building blocks for muscles. Good sources of protein include meat, fish, eggs, nuts and beans. Aim to include a high protein food in at least two meals a day.

Making sure our body has enough vitamin D is also critical for healthy muscles. People with low vitamin D levels can experience muscle weakness and low levels of vitamin D, particularly in the winter months, are not uncommon. Opt for oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, eggs and fortified breakfast cereals to boost your intake.
